Choose a career in recruitment | Gattaca

Approaching graduation? Make the most of your degree by choosing a career in recruitment

Talent Acquisition Consultant at Gattaca, Lauren Harrison, shares her experience of life after graduation and why choosing a career in recruitment was the best decision she made.

After visiting numerous career fairs during my time at university, I was overwhelmed with the variety of potential career opportunities I was presented with; there was almost too much choice! From graduate schemes to trainee roles in a wide range of sectors, I wasn’t sure where I would fit best. As a Business Management and Marketing Graduate, there were a variety of different avenues I could have chosen to venture along, but I wanted to make sure I made the right choice.

It was essential for me to choose a career that offers progression opportunities and where no two days are the same. Recruitment had always been an area I considered but I wasn’t sure at the time if it was suited to me – to my personality. My biggest concern was that I wasn’t entirely sure what the role entailed. Additionally, I didn’t know if the skills I had developed throughout my time at university were relevant to the role of a recruiter. I also believe there is misconception that recruitment is only for individuals with previous experience in the field. If you are highly motivated, driven and thrive in a sales heavy environment, then the recruitment industry is definitely a fitting career path for you.

I knew I wanted a role that was challenging, fast-paced and rewarding, and recruitment is exactly that. Once I gained more clarity on the role itself, I realised my skillset was well-matched to the job. My degree allowed me to develop key skills, including self-motivation, initiative, problem solving, strong communication and presentation skills, all of which are essential as a recruiter. I am now able to implement these skills in a target-driven environment, which is very fulfilling.

The role of a recruiter allows me to act as the ‘middle man’ between the client and the candidate, resourcing and matching the appropriate individuals to their dream jobs. I even put my marketing modules to good use – marketing the business, the current roles and even my team on platforms such as LinkedIn. As a business, we recognise that LinkedIn is a key area for attracting and connecting with potential candidates.

During my time with the business, my confidence in the role has grown and I am constantly learning and developing my skills on a daily basis – no day is the same! It is clear that this role requires a lot of patience and resilience, but with the help of a supportive team and excellent training along the way, I definitely feel I have chosen the correct career path for myself.
